JUST GRINDING AWAY

Routine maintenance is essential to keeping my kiln running efficiently and protecting both my equipment and my artwork. As it is for any potter! I recently purchased a new kiln and shelves and time has flown because it's already time to refresh my kiln shelving by grinding down old kiln wash, removing glaze drips, and reapplying a new protective layer.

This process involves using an angle grinder to carefully remove the worn kiln wash from each shelf. The kiln wash acts as a crucial barrier, preventing glaze from fusing to the shelves, reducing shadowing effects from underglazes, and helping to minimize warping over time. By maintaining these shelves properly, I ensure a longer lifespan for my kiln and better results for my ceramic pieces.

Safety First!

Safety is also a top priority. The fine dust and silica released during this process can be extremely harmful to breathe in, making protective gear essential. To equip myself for safer maintenance and daily studio work, I had to start looking to invest in a proper respirator mask, hand protection, and the right tools.

Ready to do some more firing now that my shelves are like new thanks to my awesome new gear! 🛠️😊 #Excited #NewEquipment

Funding:

I'm so grateful to the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council for their $500 grant, which helped me get essential equipment for my studio. This support allows me to maintain and run my kiln safely, and extend the longevity of my investments in my equipment that allows me to do my art.

Shout out to NMAC -- Thank you for supporting local artists like me!

This activity is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council with funds appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature from its general fund.
